Miakka Golf Club
Miakka is the most ambitious golf project this market has seen in a generation, and almost nobody looking at homes here knows it exists. It is a private club on about 1,100 acres along the Myakka River, designed by Dana Fry and Jason Straka in partnership with Paul Azinger, the Bradenton resident who won the 1993 PGA Championship.
The design brief is a Florida Sandbelt, drawing on Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath rather than on the resort golf this coast is known for. The main course measures about 7,700 yards. Alongside it are a 12-hole par-three course, a lighted putting course, a 360-degree driving range and a seven-acre short-game area, which is a practice complex out of proportion to anything else nearby.
The club came out of land the entrepreneur Steve Herrig acquired around 2018 for equestrian use, with two miles of Myakka River frontage. It was approved in 2019 and construction started in 2023, with a groundbreaking in April 2024. Membership is by invitation, with a limited number of local and national places. Nothing about the opening date is settled enough to state here.
