The Lakewood Ranch question
Lakewood Ranch straddles the Sarasota-Manatee county line, so two homes a few streets apart can be in different school districts entirely. There is no single “Lakewood Ranch” answer, only an address-by-address one. That is the first thing I check for any LWR home a family is weighing for its schools.

Which school district is Lakewood Ranch in?
Lakewood Ranch straddles the Sarasota-Manatee county line, so the district depends on the specific address. Homes on the Sarasota side attend Sarasota County Schools; homes on the Manatee side attend the School District of Manatee County. What is school choice, and does it cost anything?
School choice, called Controlled Open Enrollment in Florida, lets families request a public school outside their zoned attendance area if that school has available capacity. There is no tuition. You still need to apply during the district’s annual window, and transportation is not always provided for a choice seat.
When is the school choice application window in Sarasota and Manatee County?
The window is annual and the exact dates change each year. Sarasota County’s K-12 School Choice window typically opens in February (for 2026-27 it ran February 2 to March 2, 2026). Manatee County’s Controlled Open Enrollment typically opens in January. Always confirm the current year’s dates on the district’s official page before you plan around them.
Is school choice first come, first served?
Not in Manatee County, where Controlled Open Enrollment requests inside the window are filled by lottery, so applying early does not improve your odds. What matters is applying within the window. Sarasota assigns choice seats to schools with available capacity under its Controlled Open Enrollment plan. Either way, submitting inside the annual window is what counts.
