Moving to Sarasota from Out of State: A Relocation Checklist
A practical, step-by-step checklist for relocating to the Sarasota area — from choosing your community to establishing Florida residency.
Relocating to the Gulf Coast is exciting — and far smoother with a plan. Here’s the checklist I walk out-of-state buyers through.
90 days out: get oriented
- Define your budget and get pre-approved with a lender licensed in Florida.
- Pick your target areas (Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota, Venice/Wellen Park, Parrish, Bradenton).
- Start live virtual tours — I can preview homes for you.
60 days out: lock in the home
- Tour your shortlist (in person or by video) and make an offer.
- Schedule the inspection and get insurance quotes early.
- Line up movers and start address changes.
30 days out: prepare the move
- Confirm the closing date and final walkthrough.
- Set up utilities and internet at the new home.
- Plan travel and temporary lodging if needed.
After you close: become a Floridian
- File for the homestead exemption on your primary residence.
- Get your Florida driver’s license and register your vehicle.
- Register to vote and update your mailing address.
