Moving to Sarasota in 2026: An Out-of-State Relocation Checklist

90 days out: get oriented

• Define your budget and get pre-approved with a lender licensed in Florida.
• Pick your target areas (Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota, Venice/Wellen Park, Parrish, Bradenton).
• Start live virtual tours, I can preview homes for you.

60 days out: lock in the home

• Tour your shortlist (in person or by video) and make an offer.
• Schedule the inspection and get insurance quotes early.
• Line up movers and start address changes.

30 days out: prepare the move

• Confirm the closing date and final walkthrough.
• Set up utilities and internet at the new home.
• Plan travel and temporary lodging if needed.

After you close: become a Floridian

• File for the homestead exemptionA reduction in the taxable value of a Florida property that serves as the owner's permanent, primary residence. As of 2026, the standard exemption is worth up to $50,000, split between a portion that applies to all property taxes and a portion that applies only to non-school taxes. It's only available to permanent Florida residents on their primary home, second homes, vacation homes, and rental properties don't qualify. on your primary residence.
• Get your Florida driver’s license and register your vehicle.
• Register to vote and update your mailing address.
